Since the release of his 2005 debut album, Trap House, Gucci Mane has been one of hip-hop’s most influential artists. But away from the music scene, he served time behind bars and battled substance abuse issues. After meeting entrepreneur Keyshia Ka’oir, his entire life changed.
He had a bad reputation in the industry, but Keyshia saw a different side of him. It wasn’t hard for him to let his guard down and treat her with respect, because from the very beginning, he knew she was The One.
Here’s the real reason Gucci Mane fell in love with Keyshia Ka’oir.
How Gucci Mane met Keyshia Ka’oir
Gucci Mane found himself caught up in the system for most of his life. And in 2008, he was locked up again on a probation violation. Ahead of his 2010 release date, he was preparing to return to the industry and record a few music videos.
While behind bars, he read an issue of XXL, and the magazine’s “Eye Candy of the Year” caught his attention. He recognized the woman from her appearance in Timbaland and Drake’s “Say Something” music video. Gucci thought the woman would be perfect for his upcoming video shoot for the song “911 Emergency.” He called his manager and asked her to do whatever she needed to do to track the woman down.
That woman was Keyshia Ka’oir, and Gucci’s manager was able to locate her. The manager told Keyshia that Gucci really wanted her to appear in his music video, Keyshia was initially turned off. She told the New York Post she didn’t want to be around rappers at that point. But the calls wouldn’t stop, so she finally agreed.
Keyshia Ka’oir turned him down
Once Gucci Mane was released from behind bars, Keyshia was flown out from Miami to Atlanta a day before she was scheduled to appear on set. Gucci was busy filming his other videos, but when he found out Keyshia was in town, he told his manager to bring her on set.
In his autobiography (via Bossip), the rapper said that magazine photos didn’t do Keyshia any justice. He thought she was gorgeous. He asked Keyshia to stick around until after he finished filming, but she turned him down and said she’d see him the next day for the scheduled “911 Emergency” video shoot. Gucci wrote in his book that Keyshia turning him down made him want her even more.
The following day, she showed up on set in her all-white outfit. Gucci said there were a bunch of video vixens booked for the shoot, but he made sure Keyshia knew she was his leading lady. He had her dressing room stocked with everything she needed and made sure she was comfortable and well taken care of.
Bonding over salmon
After they had wrapped up, he practically begged her to stay in Atlanta an extra night so he could take her to dinner. Keyshia agreed, and they went out to eat at the Intercontinental Hotel in Buckhead.
In an Instagram post, Keyshia said the one thing that stood out on their first date was when Gucci held the door open for her. She didn’t expect him to be such a gentleman because of his reputation.
Still dressed in their matching all-white outfits from the video shoot, they got to know each other over dinner and began vibing right away. They even ordered the exact same thing, salmon with mashed potatoes.
Gucci said although he fell in love with her beauty at first, he realized she was more than just a pretty face. He appreciated her as a person and was intrigued by her life story.
Okay, hol’ up. Who is Keyshia Ka’oir?
Keyshia grew up in Jamaica. When she was ten, her father lost his life. After that, her mom moved Keyshia and her brothers to Canada. They stayed there for a year before settling down in Miami.
After high school, Keyshia followed in her mom’s footsteps and enrolled in nursing school. She soon realized that working in the medical field wasn’t her passion. She always had a thing for clothes, makeup, and hair. So she dropped out and enrolled in cosmetology school with a dream of becoming a celebrity stylist. On a chance encounter, she was cast in the Timbaland and Drake music video, and from there, she used her modeling jobs and paid appearances to launch a line of cosmetics.
As Gucci sat across from Keyshia and listened to her talk about her vision, he was impressed by her resilience. There was just one major issue. They had completely different lifestyles. She wasn’t much of a partier at all. The mother of three hardly went out to clubs unless it was a paid appearance.
Gucci, on the other hand, was living the rockstar lifestyle. He wanted to impress Keyshia, so he downplayed his vices. He lied to her and said he was done with drinking lean.
Falling in love
He wasn’t sure if Keyshia had read all the online rumors about him. But at that point, it didn’t really matter. They had fallen hard for each other. Keyshia flew back to Miami the next day. Soon thereafter, Gucci had to hit the road. He knew he was going to be busy with a grueling tour schedule, studio sessions, and public appearances. He didn’t want their connection to suffer, so he asked her to join him on the road. Thankfully, Keyshia agreed to go.
She told Page Six that things between them got even more serious when they went out on tour. One night, she put Gucci in the shower and bathed. Taking care of her man was something she learned while living in a traditional Jamaican household. Gucci looked at her and said, ‘Wow, no one has ever bathed me before.’”
And the intimate act had an effect on Keyshia, as well. She told Page Six that while bathing him, she fell in love with him.
Gucci Mane began to spiral out of control
After the tour ended, Keyshia remained focused on her cosmetics empire and fitness apparel, while Gucci’s mental health began to deteriorate. He had a string of physical altercations and a 2013 Twitter rant where he insulted close friends, enemies, and Keyshia. He also bragged about the various women he had hooked up within the industry, including Nicki Minaj.

A few days after going off on Twitter, he was hanging out with a friend and behaving erratically. According to TMZ, the friend decided to call the cops for help. When they arrived, Gucci began cursing at them. He was taken into custody, and upon searching him, they found a weapon and a bag of substances. Gucci was allegedly hospitalized before finding himself in a familiar place: behind bars.
While locked up, he hopped on Twitter and admitted he had been drinking lean for ten plus years, and it had completely ruined his life. He apologized for his behavior and sent out a special apology to Keyshia.
Keyshia Ka’oir stuck by his side
Most women would’ve ran, but Keyshia decided to stand by his side. She wasn’t able to bond him out because all of his collect calls had caused her phone bill to skyrocket. He remained locked up until his August 2014 trail, where he took a plea deal and was sentenced to 39 months. The following month, he caught another conviction for a 2013 incident where he hit a fan over the head with a vodka bottle at a party. That resulted in an additional three years behind bars, which ran concurrently with his 39-month sentence.
Keyshia remained in their Atlanta home while Gucci was shipped off to a federal facility. While he was gone, Keyshia told the New York Post that fans kept questioning why she was still with him. She said their questions didn’t bother her at all because she knew the real Gucci.
He had given her some money to invest in her business. And Keyshia made sure to involve Gucci in all of her business plans. She told The Fader they talked on the phone at least five to six times a day, and they constantly emailed each other.
She put Gucci on a schedule. They worked out, showered, and ate lunch at the same time. Then Gucci would call her to discuss what he ate to confirm that he was sticking to their new healthy lifestyle. It was clear that he needed that type of structured lifestyle. He also made an effort to finally get sober.
According to his autobiography (via People), he went through a painful withdrawal from lean and was able to lose 25 pounds in two weeks. He was committed to looking better and feeling better. He wanted Keyshia to see a brand-new Gucci when he was finally released, and he vowed to never get locked up again.
Keyshia Ka’oir has completely changed his life
He was released on home confinement in 2016. Not only was Keyshia right there by his side, but she told the New York Post that she had made a profit from the money he had given her.
While confined to their home, Keyshia cooked for him every day and they worked out together. After cutting off his ankle monitor, Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir, as well as rapper Fabolous and Atlanta producer Metro Boomin celebrated being spending $10,000 at a gentlemen’s club. The entire night, Gucci didn’t have one sip of alcohol. It appeared that he was a brand new man.
In order to keep him from slipping back into bad habits, Keyshia told The Fader that their entire day is scheduled from beginning to end. They get up around nine and handle their business calls and emails. They workout, and then they work all day before eating dinner, taking a shower, and lying down for the night. Keyshia said Gucci’s days of staying in the studio until six or seven in the morning are long gone. She knows that the studio is full of people smoking and drinking, and those are the things Gucci needs to stay far away from.
Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir are living happily ever after
In November 2016, he proposed to her following a halftime performance at an Atlanta Hawks’ game. And they became husband and wife in October 2017 during a $1.7 million dollar televised wedding.
Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir appear to have a loving relationship. Keyshia says she trusts him 100-percent, and Gucci told the Rickey Smiley Morning Show they never even argue with each other. Things run smoothly in their home, and Keyshia keeps him happy by cooking traditional Jamaican dishes.
Even though they have dealt with infidelity, including rumors that Keyshia hooked up with Yo Gotti, there’s absolutely nothing that can come between hip-hop’s power couple.
