Op-ed: We Need to Talk About the REAL Problem With Men Like Future

men like future

During the past few years, no artist has made headlines quite like the rapper Future (real name Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn). It’s not just his music that has caught people’s attention, though. Future has become known for planting his seed all over the place and impregnating multiple women. Things have gotten so messy,  Wendy Williams even created an infographic for the general public to keep track of Future and all of his alleged children (back when only five baby mamas were confirmed).

And while it’s all fun and games in the blogs, comments, and on Twitter, the reality is that there’s more damage being done by men like Future that we simply don’t talk about. So, let’s chat…

The Wilburn Bunch

According to The Sun, Future has eight children by eight different women.

Jakobi Wilburn was born in 2002 — Mother: Jessica Smith

Londyn Wilburn was born in 2009 — Mother: India J

Prince Wilburn was born in 2012 — Mother: Brittni Mealy

Future Wilburn was born in 2014 — Mother: Ciara

Hendrix Wilburn was born in 2018 — Mother: Joie Chavis

Kash Wilburn was born in 2020 — Mother: Unknown

Paris Wilburn was born in 2020 — Mother: Unknown

In addition, Cindy Renae Parker claimed Future was the father of her son Legend, but she dropped her paternity suit so we’re not including her in the total…yet.

A woman named Eliza Seraphin sued Future for the paternity of her daughter Reign in 2019. Eliza’s lawyer told Us Weekly in May 2020 that the test confirmed Future was the father of Eliza’s daughter Reign. Cindy and Eliza also claimed to have taken tests to prove their children are half-siblings.

A lack of respect

future your mother is a hoe

I often wonder what state of mind one is in when they decide to lie beside Future knowing his reputation. The best way to determine how someone will act is by judging their past behavior. And based on Future’s willingness to recklessly procreate, he doesn’t seem like the ideal partner to me. So, yes, we are holding the women accountable as well. Ladies, raise your standards.

Future has also shown a lack of respect for his childrens’ mothers. For example, Radar Online reported Future was texting his son Prince and referred to Prince’s mom as a “hoe” during a heated exchange. If Brittni’s a hoe then, sir, what are you?

And while Future is notorious for saying what he wants about the mothers of his children, perhaps none clapped back harder than Ciara when she filed a $15 million lawsuit against him for libel and slander. That’ll teach him.

The children pay the price

Perhaps we wouldn’t see the big deal with men like Future if his main purpose was to raise his children in homes that had a solid foundation. But since Future appears to be bringing these children into the world as the result of casual situationships, we can’t stand behind any of this.

Future isn’t alone in this. Nick Cannon is also on a journey to populate the world with his offspring. In an interview with Howard Stern, he shared he doesn’t believe in using condoms because he could die tomorrow. Even if that’s the way he feels, for him to make this announcement is irresponsible in so many ways. Having illegitimate children isn’t the only concern. Does he think he’s immune to STDs? And why are these women allow their bodies to be used as his receptacle? Smh.

In the end, the children are the ones who suffer. Men like Future — who don’t mind dropping their fluids off to whoever accepts it — are a bit too dangerous for my liking. His life is like one big game with the focus on intercourse and pleasure instead of fully investing himself in a committed relationship and creating a stable household.

How are men like Future able to spread their attention around to eight different children living in eight different households? How is he able to nurture each child, be active and present in their lives, provide them with structure and the nurturing that they need as they make the journey from childhood to adulthood? Throwing money at them every month isn’t enough. Shoot, monthly visits aren’t enough either. It takes more than that to be an active participant in a child’s life. You can’t argue that these children aren’t being raised on shaky foundations, and they are being set up to replicate generational curses.

We need to start holding men like Future socially responsible for their actions. So here’s our message to Future: Get a vasectomy and get your sh*t together.

This is not cute and it definitely ain’t funny. You’re throwing your children into a cycle of dysfunction that deserves to be broken.
